A major east coast council has vowed to drastically ramp up security across its jurisdiction, deploying body-worn cameras to staff, amid what it called a steep rise in “aggressive and violent behaviour”. The Sunshine Coast Council, in Queensland’s southeast, said there had been 73 aggressive incidents toward council staff from January to August this year — almost the total recorded over the same period in 2024, and well above the 66 in 2023.It said in addition to physical violence — which had a marked increase — badly behaved community members were also verbally abusive to council workers, with 20 incidents recorded in the eight months, up from just 12 in 2023. Even parks and gardens staff had been victims of abuse.Council said that as a result, a raft of new safety measures is set to be rolled out, including ramped-up security at certain locations, additional CCTV and body-worn cameras for staff.
