Barbarians Season Two Can Continue An Ancient Conflict to its Bloody Conclusion

For those of you still—still!—grumbling about the Game of Thrones finale, allow us to introduce you to a possible antidote to whatever hole Benioff and Weiss left in your heart: Barbarians. Barbarians, a German historical drama that debuted on Netlflix last week, is a little different than Thrones, though. Yeah, the blood, sex, and tears are there. (The dragons most certainly are not.) But like History Channel’s Vikings, Barbarians is grounded in true historical events. Mainly, the Battle of Teutoburg Forest. The battle, which went down in 9 A.D. was a significant—and still, oft-cited—event in German history. As is depicted in the Netflix show, a Germanic alliance managed to take down three Roman Legions.
