At a time when the economy is in turmoil, strikes are happening and the cost of living is skyrocketing, it’s hard to believe that there’s a group of men out there who claim to routinely take their businesses from standing still to one million plus. But that’s exactly what Charlie Hutton, the founder of the exclusive men-only community, claims.

After months of pestering and pleading, Charlie Hutton has granted me access to his closed-door community for men in business, but only after I reluctantly agreed to sign on to his rules – no disclosing other men’s stories without their express permission.

Up for the challenge, I agreed with childlike enthusiasm. Would it be a blessing or a curse to the first ‘guest’ ever permitted inside this room? With this not-so-young writer being the furthest away from ‘blokey’ ’you could imagine, I was intrigued yet nervous to step behind the closed door.

So, on a cold, dark Wednesday morning in January, I set out on a journey from my cosy flat in Brighton to the leafy suburbs of Birmingham, where the secret meeting was to take place.

The surroundings for the clandestine meeting are pleasant, to say the least. Even in the dark, this leafy area on the outskirts of Birmingham looked good with footballer mansions only partially disgusted behind private drives and fancy gates.

Charlie strides over to greet me, handing me my first good coffee of the day.

I ask why we’re not in his office in Lichfield.

“To many men here for there!” he offers as an explanation as I’m left chasing his tail as we sweep through the doors of the understated hotel.

As my eyes adjust to the light and I see Charlie dressed in his usual black, wearing cowboy boots and with the words ‘One Man Empire’ printed across his chest. I look around and realise, so is every other man in the room.

In a bright green sweatshirt, I missed the memo.

The fear starts to creep in. Is this going to turn into Charlie and his renegade army Vs the weedy journalist? Have I stepped into a cult without knowing it?

To address the elephant in the room, I introduce myself to the others. The fear subsides. There is Anush from London who runs a Management Consultancy, Adam from Bedford that has a stone restoration company, and Chris a surveyor from Glasgow.

No women (apart from Charlie’s long-suffering PA) yet lots of different men, from different backgrounds with different businesses.

The day officially begins and we all take a seat around the boardroom table. There’s an element of nervous energy, maybe excitement about what’s to come.

At the front of the room, Charlie is warm and loud in real life, with Howard Stern’s level of ‘inappropriate’ and a laugh to rival Sid James. The easily offended do not belong here.

One by one, every man shares where he is at, usually with brutal honesty.

“Gentleman, as you know, I was stuck and struggling to break past 35k a month, thinking of selling up. Then I started here 90 days ago. Last month we had our first 60k month ever! The key has really been doing exactly what Charlie says – simplify.”

""

An honest declaration from a mid-forties owner of an automotive business. It’s clear every man around the table is genuinely thrilled about his turnaround. It’s unusual to witness such camaraderie and an atmosphere electric with positivity.

Rewind to 2015 and Charlie Hutton launched this ‘movement’ to help ambitious men take back control of their businesses and their situations – just like he did.

At 28, he was running his own business and travelling around the world speaking. By 30, he was at the bottom of the barrel.

With a newborn baby, his family was falling apart and on the brink of divorce. His relentless pursuit of “more” in the business only led to his own self-destruction.

A few years later, after taking back control of his life from the business, he decided to use his past to help transform the fortune of others. His books and viral documentary series seem to already have had a serious impact in helping him achieve that goal, but his groups are the reason I’m here today.

After another generous refuelling, we move on with Charlie revealing some insider information on using the S.A.S Protocols™, the system men use to push to 1M+ with three levers Simplify, Automate, and Scale.

I’m under strict instruction not to share any of this insider knowledge as, to quote Charlie:

“Corporate clients pay the big money for this. I don’t want you giving it away for f – – – king free!”

Luckily he has given me permission to use these for myself, and I will be honest, it was lapped up with glee. (Frankly, freelance journalists need all the help we can get.) As I chat with the men around the table, it’s clear that these protocols have been the turning point for most.

“I’ve owned my own business for over 10 years and thought I knew it all,” said Chris Penman, 51 who owns an engineering firm and was up at 1.30 am to travel in for this day.

“But I’d hit a serious plateau and no matter what I tried. Making the decision to do this was like a breath of fresh air. The key for me was drastically simplifying the business. It was way too complex, and way too dependent on me – which meant I constantly felt like I was bent over a barrel by customers and staff.”

“I was able to replace five members of the team with systems and automation. It makes sense now, but the simpler things were, the more I could automate, and the more I could automate the quicker I could grow,” he told me as he outlined his own personal road to redemption.

""

With automation and systems being such a hot topic in the room, I took my chance to speak out and clear something up:

“My brother-in-law is a carpenter, how do you automate what he does?!”

I thought it wise not to ask about automating writing, the world and his wife know that AI is already coming for this job.

Unsurprisingly Charlie was the first to take the bait and respond…

“Ok, here’s the thing – automation is about removing grunt work and getting consistency wherever possible. What if he could start removing some of the manual labour in his admin process? The automatic delegation of tasks to the team? The automatic sending of updates to customers? The automatic chasing of payments? The automatic follow-up after project delivery?”

“You know all the s – – t that’s low value and sucks time,” he explained.

And at that moment, the penny dropped loudly on the floor. I got it. The cogs inside my monkey brain we turning, thinking about all the manual stuff even the writing world, as a One Man Writer.

As others spoke about how they use automation in their businesses, pennies start to drop… what Charlie calls “rising cards”

Insider knowledge and dropped pennies are weaselled away, by this time I will confess to being “pro” this place, with the results clearer than a freshly washed window.

However, there was still something in the back of my mind, something that I felt unsure, maybe uneasy about. As we all take a quick break, I strap in and take this opportunity to ask the burning question – why men only?

“This place is men only because I want it to be. Those that don’t like it are free to go somewhere else,” smiles Charlie.

A typically bold answer from the main man, and in truth, a perfectly acceptable one. He is right, no one has to be here, all the men want to.

""

Though I suspect this is not the full picture. Having been here a while I sense there is a deeper reason for the madness. After all, he gets a allot of heat online for this, called sexist, misogynist, and everything in between.

“To stand for something in this life you have to have thick skin,” he shrugs. “Being a man at the helm of a business is a lonely life. I believe it’s a truly under-appreciated part of our economic fabric.”

“They carry the weight of their employees, their families, and their own lives on their shoulders, with nowhere to turn when they inevitably stall, get stuck, and burn out,” he continued.

“Studies show that the most dishonest environment for men to be in is a mixed one. I’ll leave the reasons behind that to your imagination. Yet to succeed in this game truth and honesty are vital.”

“A half story, a half-baked tactic, or dishonest feedback helps nobody. A male only environment keeps the BS out and the truth in,” he concludes.

And it’s clear that for the men in this room, this really does work and get results. His groups are full most of the year, with Charlie personally vetting every applicant.

“Only one in four who make it as far as the interview cut the mustard and are offered the opportunity to join,” commented Charlie.

“Are the other three women?” I ask jokingly.

He laughs loudly, shaking his head and with that, we’re into the final part of the day.

Each man around the table has the opportunity to ask a question of the others in a mastermind of sorts. The questions are direct and the answers feel refreshingly honest.

""

One man around the table shares that he has been offered a big project, one that will heavily increase his revenue. The catch? He would have to be in the USA for at least a week every month leaving his young family at home. He questions what he should do.

“Look the money is great but time is precious.”

This is not the first answer I was expecting from a group of men talking business.

Charlie puts me straight, “Family values are big here. Most members have got kids, and some have been divorced. They have come to the conclusion that what got them here ain’t going to get them there. They want to do things differently. Make more and have more time.”

The more of this I consume, the more I like the sound of what’s being said. It’s real and raw, no matter the fallout.

For some, I suspect his language is too foul, too politically incorrect, and even too masculine, but maybe that’s part of his appeal, maybe that’s what’s needed to get this kind of impact.

At a time when political correctness is at an all-time high, and everyone is afraid to speak out – perhaps now more than ever there is a need for someone to shake things up and tell it how it is.

Looking at the results, it’s clear that for the right man, this environment does make better business sense. As I start to reflect, I think maybe that is the point, we are all better off together than we are apart.

One thing is for certain this group and this man are on a mission. A leader of men? That I am now convinced. A crazed cult creator? I think Charlie would be the first to proudly say yes to this one too.
