With two middle fingers pointed way up at The Man and his capitalistic obsessions, acts like Nirvana came to define the viewpoint of a generation and the sound of a decade. Punk and alternative were also big—a direct reaction to the glam and hair metal opulence of the rock music that came before them—and suddenly an entire nation was cloaked in disheveled, flannel button downs. Some of these bands have remained in tact (cheers to you, Green Day and RHCP) but others will have you wondering, what happened to those guys? Here, we look back at some of our favorite 90s groups and see where they are today. 1 of 30 Then: Green Day The trio of Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool have been cranking out hits like “Basket Case” and “When I Come Around” since 1990. They first hit it big with their album Dookie in 1994 and full ascended into superstardom with 2004’s American Idiot. 2 of 30 Now: Green Day The band is still together, performing often along with guitarist Jason White.
